Matt Kulin

Matthew Vincent Kulin; Age 49 of Alger, Michigan was born on February 8, 1974 in Rochester Hills, Michigan. He left this world on Monday  January 15, 2024 at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan.  Almost all of his 49 years were filled with his laughter. The last few  years were much tougher for him, medically, but he still often spent time laughing. He grew up in the Romeo, Michigan area and attended Romeo schools where he was on the football team.

During school breaks he worked for his older brother, Larry, doing  roofing and siding work where he learned to love classic rock.  After high school, he went  to work for his brother Chris and worked his way up from being a “grunt” to being the lead  master carpenter.  After many years with Chris, he started his own construction company.  Like most people he met, almost all of his clients became his friends.

He married in September 1996 to Jennifer (Stevenson) and together they had  Rachel & Kyle.  Married life together started in a home they purchased in Washington Township and then they moved within the township to a house that Matt himself built.  Needing a little more elbow room for his family, they purchased acreage and built a home in Imlay City, with plenty of room for his children to explore with him.  The family camped  all over Michigan and were proudly not “glampers.”  They were happy to sit with minimal  cover in the rain around a campfire sharing stories.  The camping trips also had plenty of  canoe and kayak time.  During one trip to Disney with his family and his brother Larry’s  family, Matt famously said he “wanted to sign up for a slower family” when he was forced to run back and forth across the park to get fast passes.

As an adult, Matt became more interested in politics and standing up for his republic.  He was an NRA and Michigan Gun Owners Association member.  He was an accomplished  marksman and avid collector.  He loved movies, especially comedies, and to drop quotes  from them whenever he could.  Near the end of his life, he gave us new drops: “yo” and  “be ready”.

He met Jennifer (Collins) in 2012 and they married in Jamaica in November 2019 among their close friends. Matt’s  family doubled in size as he became the proud step-father of Blake & Payton.  In 2016, Matt & Jenn  purchased a second home in Alger, MI in the Forest Lake Community.  It was an exciting  return to where he and his family spent summers as a young child.  There, Matt, Jenn, and their children spent less time camping and more time boating on the lake, kayaking the Rifle River and sitting for hours watching the birds.  He also loved hitting the 2 tracks in his Can-Am side by side.

He is survived by his wife Jennifer, daughter Rachel Kulin, son Kyle Kulin, step-daughter Blake Collins, step-daughter Payton Former, father Lawrence (Leah) Kulin, mother Mary  (William) Vanderweele, brother Laurence (Carrie) Kulin, brother Christopher Kulin, sister  Michele Kulin, and his numerous step-siblings, nieces, nephews.
